Legend has it that Canasta was "invented by the ladies of Montevideo as a counter-attraction to Poker, which, in their opinion, took up far too much of their menfolk's time"*
- Ostrow, The Complete Card Player
Canasta is an extension of Rummy, designed for two pairs and played with two packs of cards. The objective is to achieve a higher score than the opposing team by laying melds of 3 or more cards of the same value. A meld of 7 cards is called a Canasta and carries a bonus of 300 or 500 points depending on whether the meld contains wild cards or not. Sounds simple? Well there is a bit more to it but learning the rules and developing your own strategies is fun. And there are always experienced players around to help and advise.
